Vrzino kolo
An interesting and rich collection of short stories and sketches by a renowned Croatian writer, in which motifs of tradition, human destinies, and family intertwine through descriptions of rural and urban life.
Vrzino kolo is a renowned collection of short stories and prose sketches by the distinguished Croatian writer and educator Josip Pavičić (1895–1963), a work that holds a significant place in Croatian interwar and postwar literature for both young people and adults. The book’s title—derived from a folk idiom describing a tangled, magical, or inextricable cycle of events—symbolically reflects the complexities of human relationships and life’s trials. In this collection, Pavičić portrays the everyday lives of ordinary people, children, and families with exceptional warmth, immediacy, and a deep understanding of human psychology. The stories are set at the crossroads of traditional rural life and urban existence; the author masterfully depicts childhood mischief, early disappointments, and family joys, alongside the social injustices and moral dilemmas his characters face. Pavičić’s style is characterized by a fluid and vivid narrative, rich folk idioms, and strong ethical and humanistic messages. Vrzino kolo not only offers an engaging reading experience but also—through simple yet striking episodes—teaches the importance of honesty, family solidarity, and preserving one's roots.
