Izabrana djela 9: Nebo ne zna za miljenike

Erich Maria Remarque

Heaven Knows No Favoritism follows the car driver Clerfayt and the seriously ill Lillian. Aware of the transience of life, together they seek happiness, love and freedom before it's too late.

The story takes place in Europe after World War II. The main character, a racing driver Clerfayt, meets Lillian Dunkerque, a young woman suffering from tuberculosis, while visiting a friend in a sanatorium. Aware that her life is limited by her illness, Lillian decides to leave the sanatorium and spend the last months of her life traveling, enjoying the freedom and experiences that her illness has denied her for years.

Clerfayt and Lillian travel together through European cities, a deep love develops between them, but their happiness is constantly accompanied by the awareness of the transience of life. While Clerfayt risks his life in car races, Lillian struggles with an illness that gradually exhausts her body. Their relationship is based on mutual understanding, acceptance, and the desire to fill every remaining moment with meaning.

The novel shows that life is not determined by its length, but by the way a person lives it. The ending is tragic: Lillian dies from the consequences of her illness, and soon after, Clerfayt also dies in a car race. The work speaks powerfully about the transience of human life, the courage to live despite inevitable death, and the need to appreciate love, closeness, and every moment that is given to us.
