Ruth Moore

On the Maine coast, a fishing family faces debt, domestic conflict and changes that test its ties to the sea and an inherited way of life.

In Candlemas Bay, Ruth Moore portrays the Ellis family, whose identity and daily life are rooted in fishing on the Maine coast. Beneath their pride and standing in the community lie debts, frustrated expectations and tensions that threaten to pull them apart.

After her husband’s death, Jen Ellis takes in summer boarders to support the family. Her decision meets fierce resistance from her sister-in-law Candace, who sees the newcomers as a threat to the established household order. Meanwhile, young Jeb faces a choice between continuing his education and following the family’s fishing tradition, seeking his own direction amid the expectations of older generations.

This family and social novel with a coming-of-age strand explores how financial insecurity and changing livelihoods reshape private relationships. The sea informs the characters’ work, memories and sense of belonging, without shielding them from selfishness or misunderstanding.

Through vivid dialogue and closely observed daily life, Moore connects tradition and change with questions of responsibility, independence and solidarity. The resulting family drama balances hardship and disappointment with warmth and the possibility of renewed affection.
