Jaroslav Hašek initially conceived "Švejk" as a cycle of 6 novels, but he died without being able to finish even the fourth installment. Nevertheless, the first three parts of the novel, which also have biographical elements, became extremely famous.

Prague at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, 1914. Švejk is a middle-aged, simple-minded man who sells dogs and lives in the apartment of Mrs. Müller. Francis Ferdinand was recently killed in Sarajevo and Švejk in the tavern predicts that war will soon break out because Ferdinand was killed by the Turks, so he was arrested by the secret agent Bretschneider. He ends up in an insane asylum, but is released when the First World War breaks out and is forced into the military, even though he suffers from rheumatism. Švejk becomes an assistant to a drunken priest who holds mass at the front, and then to First Lieutenant Lukaš. When he steals a dog for Lukaš from a colonel, they both end up on a train to the Russian front. At the camp station, he was accused of pulling the emergency brake, and given that he had stolen the money for the ticket, and the documents were with him. Lukaša, he had to walk to České Budejovice. The guard from Putim arrests him and accuses him of espionage, but the gendarme captain from Pišice lets him go to his brigade.
