Roman kombinuje elemente socijalističkog realizma, feminizma i fantastičnog. Smešten u srednjovekovnu Francusku i Istočnu Nemačku, roman istražuje teme emancipacije žena, umetnosti i društvene borbe kroz priču o Beatriz i Lauri.

Beatriz, istorijska ličnost, oživljava kao trubadur koji se budi u modernom DDR-u nakon jednog veka sna, suočavajući se sa kapitalističkim i socijalističkim kontradikcijama. Laura, njena žonglerka, pripoveda o Beatrizinim avanturama, kombinujući srednjovekovnu poeziju sa političkim i feminističkim temama. Roman prati Beatrizin pokušaj da se prilagodi novom svetu, njenu borbu sa patrijarhalnim strukturama i njenu potragu za umetničkom slobodom. Kroz satirični i ironični ton, Morgner dovodi u pitanje rodne uloge, klasnu borbu i ulogu umetnosti u društvu.

Struktura romana je slojevita, kombinujući istorijske dokumente, poeziju i fikciju, sa naglaskom na dijalogu između prošlosti i sadašnjosti. Beatriz i Laura simbolizuju otpor žena društvenim ograničenjima, dok se roman bavi pitanjima moći, identiteta i utopijskih ideala.
