Leon Uris
Leon Marcus Uris (3. August 1924 – 21. Juni 2003) war ein US-amerikanischer Autor und Drehbuchautor, bekannt für seine historischen Romane über die Konflikte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Geboren in Baltimore, Maryland, als Sohn jüdischer Eltern, Wolf William und Anne Uris, diente er im Zweiten Weltkrieg (1942–1945) im United States Marine Corps. Seine literarische Karriere begann mit dem Roman „Battle Cry“ (1953), der auf seinen Kriegserlebnissen basierte und 1955 verfilmt wurde.
Sein bekanntestes Werk, „Exodus“ (1958), ist ein internationaler Bestseller über die Gründung Israels und das Ergebnis zweijähriger Recherchen und Interviews. Der Roman wurde 1960 mit Paul Newman in der Hauptrolle verfilmt. Es folgten Mila 18 (1961) über einen Aufstand im Warschauer Ghetto, Armageddon (1963) über das Nachkriegsberlin, Topaz (1967), ein 1969 von Hitchcock adaptierter Spionageroman, und Trinity (1976), eine Saga über den irischen Nationalismus. QB VII (1970) behandelt einen Verleumdungsprozess, der von den wahren Ereignissen des Exodus inspiriert ist. Zu seinen späteren Werken gehören The Haj (1984) über den arabisch-israelischen Konflikt und Mitla Pass (1988), ein teilweise autobiografischer Roman. Mit seiner dritten Frau, der Fotografin Jill Peabody, arbeitete er an dem Buch Ireland: A Terrible Beauty (1975).
Uris’ Romane, die in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt wurden, waren kommerziell erfolgreich, Kritiker beschrieben sie jedoch oft als eher auf historischen Fakten als auf literarischer Subtilität beruhend. Er starb 2003 auf Shelter Island im Bundesstaat New York an Nierenversagen und hinterließ einen bedeutenden Eindruck in der historischen Fiktion.
