The first edition of this book dates from 1892 (it marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America), and the second was published in 1980. This is the third, linguistically updated edition of Carić's book.
The author of the book, a respected maritime expert with maritime experience, and also a writer, in this scientifically popular historical monograph, in an interesting, instructive and poetic way presents Columbus's life path and achievements in the context of historical circumstances. Using historical sources, he describes Columbus's upbringing, youth, his maritime experiences, geographical background and all those factors that shaped him into the man that the historical moment demanded. This, the third edition of Carić's work, has been linguistically modernized. The first two chapters on pre-Columbian America have been omitted. Nikica Kolumbić's notes have been transferred from the second edition.
