Politička i psihološka drama smeštena u Beč između 1938. i 1969. Iako inspirisan stvarnim događajima iz zapadnonemačke metropole između 1934. i 1965. godine, autor je promenio vreme i mesto radnje da bi zaštitio identitet stvarnih ljudi.

Priča počinje tragičnim događajem: Valeri Stajnfeld, žena sa misterioznom prošlošću, otruje argentinskog naučnika Rafaela Arandu, a zatim izvrši samoubistvo. Njen čin pokreće lavinu događaja koji Arandinog sina Manuela uvlače u mrežu međunarodnih špijunskih igara.

Manuel, rešen da otkrije istinu o ubistvu svog oca, suočava se sa opasnostima koje dolaze iz raznih tajnih službi i političkih krugova. Tokom potrage upoznaje mladu ženu, Iren Valdeg, koja postaje njegova saveznica, ali i osoba sa svojim tajnama.

Zimel vešto prepliće lične sudbine sa velikim istorijskim događajima, istražujući teme identiteta, izdaje, ljubavi i moralnih dilema u vremenu političkih previranja. Roman, bogat likovima i napetim zapletima, pruža dubok uvid u ljudsku prirodu i složenost međuljudskih odnosa u kontekstu istorijskih turbulencija.
