Pjesme neuvrštene u zbirke 1936-1955.

Tin Ujević

This collection, the fourth volume of "Selected Works", contains around 200 poems that were not included in Tino's main collections of that period. Nedjeljko Mihanović compiled the collection based on manuscripts, journals and archives.

The period 1936–1955 was marked by Ujević's maturation: from pre-war melancholy ("Žalosna Svetovidova kula", 1936) through war traumas ("Snovi i nemiri", 1940s) to post-war contemplation ("Živa vatra", 1954). The unlisted poems, written in exile, prison and cafe escape, bear the stamp of an intimate diary of the soul – fragmentary, improvised, but deeply personal.

The themes are multi-layered: existential suffering, love as salvation and pain, nature as a sacred space (sea, mountains, wind as symbols of eternity), spiritual quest (biblical motifs, Eastern mysticism, Croatian folklore). The language is rich in archaisms, metaphors and rhythm, like the "song about the eternal nomad" – Ujević's alter ego. Examples: "Night in the Adriatic" evokes the darkness of war, "Bird Song" celebrates transience, "Prayer for the Dead" deals with loss.

These poems reveal an evolution: from expressionist passion to Zen-like simplicity. Mihanović's introduction analyzes the context, emphasizing their value for a complete portrait of the poet. The collection is a gem for lovers of Croatian lyric poetry, showing how Ujević finds the universal in the "unclassified" - a man on the edge of time and eternity.

The title poem, "The Black Rabbit," represents a kind of symbolist maneuver within "real" poetry, because like Baudelaire's "Albatross," it possesses a pronounced unambiguous charge.
