Afrička putovanja: Bez kolonijalnog pasoša

Yugoslav journalists explore Africa during decolonisation through travel writing and reportage, linking encounters and everyday life with political transformation.

Afrička putovanja: Bez kolonijalnog pasoša brings together travel accounts and journalistic reports from a continent undergoing anticolonial struggles and the emergence of independent states. Its contributors combine firsthand observations with political developments, economic conditions and encounters with people whose lives were changing alongside their countries.

The collection ranges from Egypt, Suez and Algeria through Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Sudan to Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Liberia. Contributors include Zdravko Pečar, Zoran Žujović, Čedo Kisić, Vladimir Kolar, Aleksandar Nenadović and Žika Bogdanović.

Political reporting alternates with scenes of everyday life, descriptions of cities and landscapes, and observations on social relations. The Suez Crisis, Algeria’s independence struggle, events in Congo and apartheid appear alongside accounts of the Nile, the Sahara, work, traditions and the development ambitions of newly independent countries.

A concluding section examines Yugoslavia’s presence in Africa, its relations with emerging states and the people who worked there. The subtitle, meaning “Without a Colonial Passport,” signals the collection’s anticolonial perspective. The volume is therefore also a document of Yugoslav perceptions of Africa in the early 1960s.

It will appeal to readers of travel literature, journalism history and international affairs, particularly those interested in the meeting of personal experience and historical change.
