Tri kćeri gospođe Lijang (1969.) jedan je od posljednjih i najzrelijih romana Pearl S. Buck. Radnja je smještena u Kinu sredinom 20. stoljeća i prati sudbinu obitelji koju je muževa nevjera rastavila.

Gospođa Lijang, žena dostojanstvene konfucijanske mirnoće, napušta muža kad on uzme konkubinu te sama kreće iznova. Otvara ugledan restoran u Šangaju i postaje materijalno neovisna. Tri kćeri — Grace, Mercy i Joy — šalje na školovanje u Ameriku, želeći im osigurati budućnost daleko od nemira koji se nadvio nad Kinom.

Dok komunizam preuzima zemlju, a Kulturna revolucija se razbuktava, svaka kći bira drugi put: jedna se vraća majci, jedna ostaje na Zapadu, treća traži vlastiti put između dvaju svjetova. Gospođa Lijang ostaje u Kini, svjedoči promjenama i čuva obitelj koliko joj je to u moći. Buck ponovno piše o ženi koja se, ostavljena od muža, ne prepušta žalosti — nego djeluje; te o cijepanju obitelji i doma između starog i novog svijeta.
