Smrt Smail-age Čengića

Smrt Smail-age Čengića

Ivan Mažuranić

Der Tod des Smail-Alters Čengić, a classic work of Croatian literature, is a romantic song with 1134 verses (Achten und Zehnen), composed in five Gesängen, partly commissioned by Dimitrije Demetro.

Mažuranić finds the basic material in a real event, the death of the Turkish hero and Herzegovinian pasha Smailage Čengić in the conflict with the Montenegrins in the fall of 1840. The basic idea of the song is the transience of force, faith in justice and the final victory of good in life.
