Der Tod des Smail-Alters Čengić, ein klassisches Werk der kroatischen Literatur, ist ein romantisches Lied mit 1134 Versen (Achten und Zehnen), komponiert in fünf Gesängen, teilweise im Auftrag von Dimitrije Demetro.

Den Grundstoff findet Mažuranić in einem realen Ereignis, dem Tod des türkischen Helden und herzegowinischen Paschas Smailage Čengić im Konflikt mit den Montenegrinern im Herbst 1840. Die Grundidee des Liedes ist die Vergänglichkeit der Gewalt, der Glaube an die Gerechtigkeit und der endgültige Sieg des Guten im Leben.
