Jonas, inspired by the character of Howard Hughes, builds a business empire in aviation and Hollywood, but his success comes at the cost of personal relationships and morality. He clashes with his father's friend, attorney Nevada Smith, and enters into passionate relationships with a series of women, including actress Rina Marlowe, whose rise and fall reflect the glamour and cruelty of the film industry. The novel explores themes of greed, betrayal, and trauma, as Jonas's obsession with power and control leads to conflicts with rivals and the loss of loved ones. The plot stretches from Nevada to Hollywood, chronicling the tumultuous transformation of American society.
Robbins's dynamic style, with an emphasis on drama, sex, and emotional conflict, makes the novel appealing to a wide audience. Hunters in the Dark offers a glimpse into the world of wealth and fame, where dreams are crushed under the weight of corruption and ambition. Jonas's complex personality - genius mixed with cruelty - makes him a tragic hero, and the novel vividly depicts the struggle for the American dream in an era of excess and crisis.
