During his usual morning nap in the basement of the police headquarters in Copenhagen, the head of Sector Q, Carl Mørck, receives a call from a colleague from the police station on the island of Bornholm. When he realizes that he is trying to bring another old case to him, Carl sucks him out. It is about the unusual death of a beautiful seventeen-year-old girl who died by being thrown into a tree during a traffic accident, and the perpetrator was never found. Just a few hours after that call, a tragedy will occur at the colleague's farewell party, and Carl and his team will still find themselves in the middle of a complicated investigation on Bornholm. And while new corpses pile up there, and an old case and long-hidden secrets come to the surface, on the island of Öland in Sweden, known for its windmills and megalithic monuments, one skilled and determined manipulator will not let anyone stand in her way...
