A strange horseman moves in the clear moonlight across the night savannah, terrifying its inhabitants. The rider has no head. Who is he and where did he come from?

The story begins with the arrival of the wealthy Poindexter family from Louisiana to Texas, where they intend to buy a plantation. They are accompanied by Maurice Gerald, a wild horse hunter, and Cassius Calhoun, an army officer in love with Louise. Louise, however, falls in love with Maurice, which arouses Calhoun's jealousy and hatred. Soon, Henry Poindexter is murdered, and all evidence points to Maurice. The murder is shrouded in mystery because witnesses claim to have seen a horseman - without a head - galloping across the prairie. Maurice is caught, imprisoned, and convicted. However, a headless horseman appears, causing fear and confusion. With the help of loyal friends and Louise, Maurice manages to escape, and the real truth slowly comes to light. In the end, it is revealed that the murderer is actually Cassius Calhoun, who planned everything to get rid of Maurice and win Louise. The "headless horseman" was part of a plan to solve the crime - actually a disguised figure (a horse with a headless doll) who confused the witnesses and diverted the investigation.
