Stef Penney

Seventeen-year-old Francis Ross disappears from the small town of Dove River, in a remote, snow- and weather-stricken part of Canada, in 1867.

On the same day, his mother discovers the scalped body of his friend and neighbor, Frenchman and fur trader Laurent Jammet. The murder will draw a whole host of characters to this small community, made up mostly of Scottish emigrants – from representatives of the Fur Company, such as the young Donald Moody, who will try to solve the case, to the eccentric Thomas Sturrock, drawn by a mysterious plaque in the possession of the deceased trader. But it is only the appearance of the searcher William Parker, caught searching the deceased's cabin, that will alarm the town, and most of all Francis's mother, convinced that Parker could tell her something about her runaway son. Mrs. Ross, weighed down by the burden of a bad marriage and the guilt of failing as a mother, will decide to run away with Parker and set out in search of her son in order to prove that he is not a possible murderer. These seemingly incompatible characters will travel deep into the Canadian wilderness, through snow-covered forests and tundra, through awe-inspiring and terrifying wastelands inhabited only by wild animals, eccentrics and fugitives. The search for her son and the real killer will uncover long-lost sisters, a forgotten Native American culture and the wealth hidden in stolen furs, and along the way Mrs. Ross will try to find a long-forgotten part of herself. Winner of the Costa Book of the Year Award and a semi-finalist for the Orange Prize, The Tenderness of Wolves, Stef Penney's debut novel, is an incredible masterpiece of panoramic description and storytelling that will stay with you long after you've finished reading the last page. Screenwriter Stef Penney uses masterful lines to depict the harsh and merciless Canadian wilderness, as well as the communities whose members were born and raised in the isolation in which they live. Adventure, tension, twists, complex human desires, motivations and relationships are part of this historical story, an exciting thriller, a detective novel or, simply - the novel of the year.
