Glavni lik, Ernő Nemecsek, najmanji i najslabiji član bande, pokazuje izuzetnu hrabrost i odanost. Unatoč poniženjima i zdravstvenim problemima, Nemecsek se žrtvuje za prijatelje, sudjelujući u ključnoj borbi za grund. Vođa bande, János Boka, oličava mudrost i pravednost, dok se drugi dječaci, poput Čonaša i Geréba, suočavaju s moralnim dilemama i izdajom. Geréb, koji prelazi Crvenim košuljama, kasnije traži oprost, dodajući složenost odnosima.

Molnár majstorski prikazuje dječji svijet kao mikrokosmos odraslog društva, s pravilima, hijerarhijom i sukobima. Roman je prožet nostalgijom, ali i tragičnošću, jer Nemecsekova žrtva i gubitak grunda zbog urbanizacije naglašavaju prolaznost djetinjstva.
