Čarobnost mističkog života

Anđela Sorazu

"The Magic of the Mystical Life" is a spiritual-ascetic work by Sister María Ángela Sorazu y Aizpuru (1873–1921), a Basque Poor Clare nun (convent in Valladolid, Spain).

The book is a practical and meditative guide through the inner, mystical life of the soul. Sister Anđela does not write a theoretical treatise, but shares personal experience and wisdom gained in deep contemplation and union with God. The main themes and content include:

  • The beginning of the mystical path - the importance of inner silence, renunciation of the sensual and everyday, and the first steps in meditation and prayer of the heart.
  • The dark night of the spirit - a description of the trials, dryness, feelings of abandonment and inner darkness that God allows to purify the soul from selfishness and attachment.
  • Enlightenment and engagement - phases in which the soul experiences the deep presence of God, spiritual comforts, visions and ecstasies, but also the dangers of illusions and pride.
  • Love as the center - the emphasis that the mystical life is not in spectacular experiences, but in complete love for God and neighbor. Holiness is not perfectionism, but surrender and love.
  • Unity with God – describing a “spiritual marriage” or full transformation in which the soul lives in the continuous presence of God, even in the midst of daily work and suffering.

The style is simple, warm and sincere – she often addresses the reader directly, like a spiritual mother to her children. The book is full of practical advice for religious and lay people: how to deal with distractions in prayer, how to recognize God’s action, how to avoid spiritual pride. It is inspired by classical mystical authors (Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross), but brings a fresh, Basque spirit and a feminine perspective.

In Yugoslavia in the 1980s it was highly regarded in Catholic circles, especially among nuns and spiritual seekers, as an accessible introduction to mysticism without excessive scholasticism. Today it is considered one of the gems of 20th-century Spanish Clarisse spirituality, sought after in antiquarian and spiritual libraries.
