Yaa Gyasi

A magnificent multi-generational saga about two half-sisters, Effie and Esi, born in 18th century Ghana. One stays in Africa, the other is sold into slavery in America. A poignant story about the legacy of slavery, colonialism and the search for roots.

Homecoming (2016) is the debut novel by Ghanaian-American author Yaa Gyasi, which won numerous awards and became an international bestseller.

The novel begins in 18th century Ghana. Two half-sisters, Effia and Esi, were born into different circumstances and never met. Effia marries an English governor and lives in the luxury of Cape Coast Castle, a fortress from which the slave trade took place. Esi is captured in the same fortress and sold into slavery in America. From that moment on, the novel follows their descendants through eight generations – parallel destinies on two continents.

In Ghana we follow the legacy of wars, colonialism and the consequences of the slave trade, while in America we witness slavery on plantations, the Civil War, segregation, Harlem of the Jazz Age and all the way to the modern era. Each chapter is dedicated to a descendant, creating a mosaic of voices and destinies.

Gyasi writes powerfully, poetically, and precisely, without sentimentality. The novel deeply explores themes of inherited trauma, race, identity, family, and a return to roots. Homecoming is an ambitious, emotional, and intellectually powerful work that is considered one of the most important novels of the 21st century about the legacy of slavery and the African-American experience.
