Junak je prikazan kao snažan, ali i unutrašnje nemiran čovek koji pokušava da ostane veran sopstvenim moralnim principima. Roman nije samo avanturistička priča već i razmišljanje o časti, slobodi i usamljenosti čoveka. Autor opisuje prostrane predele, atmosferu prerije i napet odnos između zakona i bezakonja.
