Miris zemlje i mora: predratne pripovijesti

Josip Kosor

A collection of short stories by the prominent Croatian novelist, playwright, and travel writer from Trbounje near Drniš. The book contains Kosor's earlier, pre-war stories written before World War I, which were then collected for the first time.

In these stories, Kosor strongly evokes the scent and atmosphere of the Dalmatian karst, land and sea. The main themes are primitive vitality, passion, instincts, the fate of peasants and fishermen, the relationship between man and nature, and the conflict between natural instinct and social norms. His style is vitalistic, sensual and expressive — full of strong colors, smells, physicality and almost animalistic energy of the characters. Critics have often emphasized his "Mediterranean vitalism" and his proximity to naturalism and early modernism.

Unlike some of his later works, in this collection Kosor is still deeply rooted in his native Dalmatian environment (hinterland and coast), depicting people as part of nature — raw, passionate and fatefully bound to the land and sea.

The book represents an important part of Kosor's oeuvre from his most prolific phase and is one of the characteristic examples of Croatian regional prose with universal motifs. Today, the antiquarian book is sought after, especially the first edition from 1925.
