Underworld USA is the first book in James Ellroy's acclaimed trilogy. The story takes place between the late 1950s and November 22, 1963, during the Cold War, the rise of the Kennedy brothers, the FBI, the CIA, and organized crime. The story centers on Pete Bondurant, Kemper Boyd, and Ward Littell—three men whose lives become intertwined through a web of political intrigue, covert operations, blackmail, and violence. While serving various centers of power, they gradually become part of a conspiracy that leads to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
