Dinko Šimunović

The selection of short stories by Dinko Šimunović, edited by Dragutin Rosandić, brings together anthological works of Croatian interwar prose with an emphasis on life in the harsh region of the Dalmatian hinterland.

The collection of short stories of classics of Croatian literature by Dinko Šimunović, selected and with an afterword by the distinguished pedagogue and literary critic Dragutin Rosandić, brings together four superb prose works: Muljika, Rudica, Đerdan and Kukavica. These works faithfully depict the specific ambience of the Dalmatian hinterland, its harsh landscapes, but above all the complex, often tragic fates of its inhabitants.

In these short stories, Šimunović proves to be an unsurpassed psychologist and colorist who, with deep empathy and lyrical warmth, portrays marginalized individuals, especially sensitive children and suffering women faced with cruel patriarchal norms, poverty and ignorance. Through striking motifs, such as a child's longing for beauty in Muljika or the tragic symbolism of jewelry in Đerdan, the author combines naturalistic elements with impressionistic painting of nature. Rosandić's afterword expertly and analytically contextualizes Šimunović's oeuvre, highlighting the enduring aesthetic value and humanistic message of his stories, making this book a key reading for understanding the foundations of the modern Croatian short story.
