Ivan Aralica

"Dogs in the Market Place" is the first novel by Ivan Aralica, which attracted the attention of readers, placing him among the finest prose writers of recent Croatian literature. With an afterword by Velimir Visković.

Dogs in the Market Place is one of the most famous historical novels by Croatian writer Ivan Aralica. The story is set in the 18th century in the Dalmatian hinterland, in an area where Ottoman, Venetian and local influences meet. Through the life of a small market place, Aralica depicts complex relationships between people of different classes, religions and political interests.

The center of events is the market place, which is at the same time a place of trade, encounters, conflicts and power struggles. The novel does not have a single main character, but brings a wide gallery of characters: Turkish governors, local merchants, priests, village chiefs, outlaws and ordinary people trying to survive in uncertain times. Their destinies intertwine through trade, love affairs, revenge, political intrigues and the struggle for social status.

An important role is played by local powerful people who try to preserve or expand their influence. Their conflicts often affect ordinary people, who become victims of the arbitrariness of the authorities, taxes and violence. At the same time, personal stories of love, betrayal and family loyalty develop. Aralica faithfully depicts everyday life: fairs, caravan trips, trading in livestock and goods, relations between Christians and Muslims and the constant feeling of insecurity on the border of great empires.

The titular dogs have a symbolic meaning. They represent people who fight for survival in a harsh world, but also those who, due to greed, power or fear, lose human dignity. The novel explores themes of power, justice, violence and moral choice, showing how historical circumstances shape human destinies.

Thanks to its rich language, convincing characters and detailed depiction of the historical setting, Dogs in the Market Place is considered one of the most important Croatian historical novels of the second half of the 20th century.
