The novel depicts social and moral changes in Russia after the revolution.
Leonov describes the conflict between old values and the new social order through the fates of various characters. The “locusts” symbolize people who live at the expense of others, exploit chaos and adapt to any government for their own benefit. The author criticizes greed, hypocrisy and the moral decay of a part of society. The main characters try to find meaning and stability in a time of great political and social changes. The novel is psychologically and socially very complex, with many dialogues and internal conflicts.
