Erskine Caldwell

A naturalistic novel about the downfall of the Lesseps family in the impoverished American South. Through misery, hunger, and moral decay, Caldwell exposes the devastating impact of the Great Depression on the common man.

Tobacco Road (1932) is the most famous and influential novel by American writer Erskine Caldwell. Set in rural Georgia during the Great Depression, it follows the tragic fate of the Lesseps family (Lester), former landowners who have fallen into poverty and become tenants. The head of the family, Jeeter Lesseps, desperately clings to his grandfather and his dream of growing cotton, even though he no longer has the means or strength to work the land.

Caldwell uses raw realism and elements of black humor to depict the complete material, physical, and moral degradation of poor white people in the American South. Impoverished and hungry, the family members gradually lose all human qualities and empathy: they are driven solely by the most basic instincts for survival, food, and sexual pleasure. Their state of apathy and ignorance prevents them from making any progress, while the capitalist system and industrialization irreversibly push them to the margins.

The novel caused a storm of reactions upon its publication due to its shocking and uncompromising portrayal of taboo subjects, but it soon became one of the most important works of Southern literature. Through bitter satire and a naturalistic approach, Caldwell not only provides social criticism, but also creates a poignant testimony to hopelessness and human nature at the very bottom of society.
