Roman Rejčel Fild zasnovan je na istinitoj priči o njenoj pratetki Henriet Deluzi-Desportes, francuskoj guvernanti koja se zaljubila u vojvodu de Praslina, svog poslodavca. Kada je Praslinova žena ubijena, Deluzi-Desportes je bio umešan. Skandal je doprineo političkim previranjima pre Francuske revolucije 1848. godine, koja je zbacila kralja Luja Filipa I.
