Ferdo Ž. Miler

Ferdo Z. Miller, professor and writer. He was born on 18 IX. 1853 in Urfahr in Upper Austria. He graduated from public school and high school in Osijek, and completed his studies in classical philology and Slavic studies in Vienna in 1878. He worked as a high school teacher in Osijek and Zagreb. He was a dramatist at the Zagreb National Theater (1899–1901) and editor of the youth newspaper Pobratim (1906–14). He wrote stories, reading books, grammars, occasional pieces and compositions, and he left the greatest mark in literary history as a playwright. His cheerful plays Lijepo li ga zaludiše (1877), The First Rain and Uncle's Will (1898), the comedy The Enchanted Closet (1896), the tragedy Cvieta and Miljenko (1900), and the melodrama The Husband and the Wife (1902) were performed in Zagreb's HNK. He translated poems from German, Swedish and Dutch and from Croatian to German. He also translated for the theater, mainly comedies and opera librettos, from German, Italian, French and Russian.
