Marcel Proust
Marcel Proust (July 10, 1871 – November 18, 1922) was one of the most important French writers of the 20th century, best known for his monumental novel In Search of Lost Time (À la recherche du temps perdu), published in seven volumes between 1913 and 1927. Proust was born in Paris into a wealthy bourgeois family. He studied law and philosophy, but devoted himself to literature at an early age.
His early works include the essay collection Les Plaisirs et les Jours (1896), but it was not until Swann's World (1913), the first part of his epic, that he achieved significant literary recognition. The main theme of Proust's prose is the transience of time and memory, particularly evoked by the famous motif of the Madeleine cookie, which symbolizes sudden recollection.
Proust's style is characterized by long sentences, introspective analysis, and rich psychological insight. Despite health problems, he worked for almost a decade, locked in his cork-paneled room, to complete his life's work.
His influence on world literature is enormous – numerous authors, from Nabokov to Beckett, have cited Proust as a key inspiration.
