Anne Golon

Anne Golon

Anne Golon, born Simone Changeux (Toulon, December 17, 1921 – Versailles, July 14, 2017), was a French writer and journalist, world-renowned as the author of the historical-romantic series about Angélique—one of the most successful literary cycles in 20th-century popular fiction. From a young age, she showed an interest in writing, painting, and travel. During the Second World War, she participated in the Resistance movement, and after the war, she traveled through Africa, where she met her future husband, Vsevolod Goloubinoff, known by the literary pseudonym Serge Golon.

She began her literary career with the novel Au pays de derrière mes yeux (1944), published under the pseudonym Joëlle Danterne. She achieved global fame with the novel ** Angélique, marquise des anges (1956)**, the first installment in an extensive historical series that follows the fate of the beautiful, courageous, and independent Angélique de Sancé de Monteloup in 17th-century France, during the reign of Louis XIV. The series weaves together romance, adventure, political intrigue, social conflict, and a woman’s struggle for personal freedom. Among the most well-known sequels are Angélique, le chemin de Versailles (1958), Angélique et le Roy (1959), Indomptable Angélique (1960), Angélique se révolte (1961), Angélique et son amour (1961), and Angélique et le Nouveau Monde (1964). The narrative gradually expands from the French courtly society toward the Mediterranean and North America, presenting a rich historical panorama of the European and colonial world.

Serge Golon participated in historical research and the preparation of source material, which is why many editions bear the joint byline Anne and Serge Golon. Following his death in 1972, Anne continued to write the series on her own. Her books have been translated into numerous languages, sold in the millions, and adapted for the screen.

Anne Golon left a significant mark on popular historical and romantic literature, shaping Angélique into a symbol of female determination, independence, and resistance against societal constraints. Her work is characterized by a dynamic plot, historical detail, strong female characters, and a blend of romance and adventure storytelling.
