Obstacles (1905) is a novel that depicts personal and social obstacles in Croatian bourgeois life. The central theme is the conflict of ideals, love, and duty with social norms, moral expectations, and class barriers.
The novel's author's motto is "I've always found it strange that writers have to invent things, all you have to do is listen to people's stories, destinies, secrets. Do you know, my child, that everyone in our family has a life for a novel?"
The novel deals with social and moral problems of man in contemporary society. Through the fates of the main characters, the author depicts human arrogance, ambition and the consequences of wrong decisions.
