British intelligence officer Bernard Samson is struggling with the aftermath of his wife Fiona’s defection to the East. A mission in Mexico offers a chance to restore his professional standing: he must persuade disaffected KGB officer Erich Stinnes to defect. The men already know each other—Stinnes once interrogated Samson in East Berlin.
Their former hostility makes any approach delicate. Samson must judge whether Stinnes genuinely wants to change sides while navigating the suspicions of his own Service. Every apparent opportunity raises another question about who is directing events and who might be expendable.
