Na krhka ramena dvanaestogodišnjeg Artemisa Fowla kao da su se sručile sve brige svijeta. Njegov otac, inače šef irske zločinačke organizacije poginuo je nakon jednog sumnjivog posla s ruskom mafijom. Razum njegove majke jednostavno je zgasnuo od tuge. Uz pomoć dvoje vjernih slugu, Butlera i Juliette, Artemis će morati propustiti novu školsku godinu i preuzeti nadzor nad obiteljskim imanjem i poslovima.

No Artemis Fowl nije običan dvanaestogodišnjak, on je ipak sin svog oca, vrhunski obrazovan, nadnaravno lukav i odgojen da ne bira način na putu do cilja, ni zakoni, ni moralni obziri, ni zastrašujući protivnici neće ga spriječiti da se dokopa svoje tone zlata.

Slijedeći niz gotovo nevidljivih tragova Artemis Fowl je otkrio da vilinski svijet doista postoji, dokopao se vilinske knjige čarolija i pravila i naumio je oteti pravu vilu ne bi li za nju prema složenim pravilima vilinskog društva mogao zatražiti bogatu otkupninu. Kada mu to stvarno i uspije, ustanovit će da je zapravo oteo Holly Short, pripadnicu specijalne vilenjačke policijske postrojbe. Čini se da će Artemis Fowl napokon susresti dostojnu, iako prilično šarmantnu, protivnicu.
