Strah od letenja

Erica Jong

The novel Fear of Flying (1973) is considered a cult work of feminist literature. The story follows Isadora Wing, a 29-year-old poet in an unhappy marriage to psychiatrist Bennett.

While traveling to a psychology congress in Vienna, Isadora meets Adrian Goodlove, an English psychoanalyst, whose bohemian spirit and sexual freedom attract her. The novel explores her search for identity, sexual liberation, and escape from conventional expectations.

Isadora struggles with internal conflicts—her fear of losing the security of marriage and her desire for a casual, passionate relationship symbolized by the term “zipless fuck,” a relationship without emotional commitment. Through witty and introspective monologues, Jong exposes women’s sexual fantasies, societal pressures, and patriarchal norms. Set in Europe, Isadora, after her disappointment in Adrian, embarks on a solo journey in search of her own voice and freedom.

The novel is known for its candid portrayal of female sexuality and psychological depth, pushing the boundaries of 1970s literature. Jong’s style combines humor, irony, and literary references, making the work both entertaining and provocative. Fear of Flying became a symbol of female emancipation, inspiring generations of female readers and influencing feminist literature.
