Posljednji Stipančići

Posljednji Stipančići

Vjenceslav Novak

The novel The Last Stipančići is set in the first decade of the 19th century. It is focused on the decline of a patrician family and goes far into the past, into the last two generations of this family.

All the events on the political scene in Croatia can be followed through faithful descriptions, as well as individual turmoil and the effects of war on the entire nation, but shown through the life and actions of the only bearer of the plot, Ante Stipančić. After reading the novel, a bitter taste remains, accompanied by the memory of society's relationship to individuals and vice versa, the relationship between spouses, the relationship of a father to children, which is anything but parental, and above all, the relationship of a son to his mother and sister. The enormous wealth that was inherited is the pride of this family, which places all its hopes and dreams in its only son, who becomes a "prodigal son", and with his reckless way of life brings himself and his family to the beggar's pole, not even caring about the sick after his father's death. sister or mother who live in the worst misery and all because of him.
