Vrijeme i vječnost - Etika, politika, religija

Vrijeme i vječnost - Etika, politika, religija

Peter Kuzmič

Time and eternity is the title of this great collection of columns from the pen of one of the leading and most respected public intellectuals in Croatia, also well known in many parts of the world.

As we, the inheritors of modernity, reflect on this challenging title, we will remember one significant feature of the modern age. Peter Sloterdijk wrote in his book Weltfremdheit that "modern times are an epoch in which the world is ahead of everything." "The world before all" means: the sky receded before the world as the world expanded to fill the dimensions of reality. "The world before everything" means: only time has meaning, while eternity does not. We can give up heaven and eternity only at the expense of earth and time. "Time or eternity!" is the motto of the modern age. However, Dr. Kuzmič does not see it that way. As evidenced by the title of his book Time and Eternity, he tries to encompass them as a whole. Is he not aware that times are changing and that we now live in a modern world? Is he a religious obscurantist, with his head in the clouds and his feet dangling, barely touching the ground? On the contrary! The list of his very earthly achievements is too long to list them all here. He was one of the best students at every educational institution he attended, in our country or abroad. He has published a number of books and articles that have been translated into several world languages. He traveled the world speaking to numerous audiences on all five continents! He presided over international theological commissions and gatherings, fed the hungry, defended those who were denied human rights, and patiently built peace where there was deadly enmity! He built successful higher education institutions and joined public debates about the future of our world! He is wanted by American congressmen, Eastern European presidents and businessmen as well as by artists! He is immersed in worldly affairs more deeply than anyone I know. He is a man of our time, a man of the modern age, with all the joys and sorrows, many victories and even more frequent sufferings.
