Janko Matko

Many readers adore the works of Janko Matko because of the life stories, but also the themes of patriotism and deep religiosity. "The Maid" is just such a novel.

Veronika was one of nine children in the Rubinić family. Because of her appearance, she became a family disgrace. When she became a girl, her mother sent her to Zagreb to find a job.

Despite her congenital physical defect, Veronika is hired by the wealthy Sučić family of the city, and she quickly proves herself to be a hardworking and good maid.

And it would have been a completely peaceful and quiet life of a city maid who managed in a cruel world even though she was born hunchbacked, if one passionate night with the youngest Sučić had not happened. That night will completely change her life and direct it in a completely unexpected direction...
