Sicilijanac

Sicilijanac

Mario Puzo

Set in 1950s Sicily, Mario Puzo's novel follows the life of legendary outlaw Salvatore "Turia" Giuliano, inspired by a real person. The story takes place in the post-war period, where poverty, corruption, and the mafia dominate Sicilian society.

Turi Giuliano, a charismatic young man, becomes an outlaw after killing a carabinieri in self-defense. Hiding in the mountains, he gathers a band of loyalists and becomes a folk hero, robbing the rich and sharing the spoils with the poor. His fight against the authorities and the mafia attracts the attention of all of Italy, but also powerful enemies, including Don Croce, the boss of the Sicilian mafia. Don Croce, cunning and manipulative, sees Turi as a threat to his power, but also as a potential ally.

At the heart of the story is Turi's relationship with his childhood friend, Aspanu Pisciotto, and his love for the beautiful Justina. The novel explores themes of honor, betrayal, justice, and the conflict between personal ideals and harsh reality. As Turi tries to reform Sicilian society, he faces political intrigue, betrayal, and ruthless violence.

Puzo masterfully portrays the Sicilian landscape, culture, and moral dilemmas, creating a tense story of heroism and tragic fate. The novel ends with a dramatic twist, revealing the complexity of Turi's struggle and the inevitability of his downfall.
