Zercalo naroda: Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski – Povijest umjetnosti i politika

Ivana Mance

A study on the activity and contribution of Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski in the field of art history, as well as on the institutionalization of this profession in the wider framework of historiographical sciences in Croatia in the 19th century.

The establishment of cultural and artistic heritage as an important stronghold of national identity was the main social purpose of efforts in this field, so Ivan Kukuljević can be considered one of the first and most important promoters of collective awareness of historical cultural heritage, i.e. the creator of the initial body of national heritage. The book deals with the historical context of his activity, primarily in the narrower political framework of the Croatian countries within the Habsburg Monarchy, with a special emphasis on the Croatian political movement of 1848/49. that is, the decade of neo-absolutism that followed, as a period crucial for understanding the idea of national culture and art.
