Goldsteins „Geschichte Kroatiens“ ist eines der zuverlässigsten Bücher, die in der vergangenen Zeit veröffentlicht wurden, und ist besonders reich an historischen Werken.

Die meisten von ihnen haben von Anfang an einen politischen oder politisierten Umgang mit der Vergangenheit. Dies ist jedoch weder bei diesem noch bei den anderen Büchern von Goldstein der Fall. Streng im Rahmen der Geschichtswissenschaft spricht der Autor in jeder verständlichen Sprache über die brennenden Momente der Geschichte, wobei seine Analyse der Zeit vor und nach dem Heimatkrieg, also seine Beschreibung, besonders wichtig ist. Goldsteins Orientierung an allen möglichen Quellen, von politischen Dokumenten bis hin zu den Texten populärer Unterhaltungslieder, verleiht seiner Geschichte eine in unserem Land seltene Breite.
