Mario Puzo sammelte mehr als zehn Jahre lang Material für die Geschichte über die dunkelste italienische Familie, die Borgias, konnte sie jedoch nicht zu Ende bringen. Es war seine lebenslange Weggefährtin, die Schriftstellerin Carol Gino.

Im fünfzehnten Jahrhundert existierte Italien, wie wir es heute kennen, noch nicht. Fünf Großmächte und unabhängige Stadtstaaten, die von alten Familien regiert wurden, kämpften um Gebiete. Die Gesellschaft wurde von Aufruhr erschüttert, Gesetzlosigkeit herrschte auf den Straßen Roms und des Vatikans. Mit Geld konnte man alles kaufen: Stellung in der Gesellschaft, Begnadigung, Gottes Vergebung. Gleichzeitig war es eine Zeit großer Errungenschaften in den Bereichen Philosophie, Kunst, Medizin, Musik und Kultur. Die Frührenaissance war die Zeit von Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo und Rodrigo Borgia und seiner Familie.
