Čiča Tomina koliba

Harriet Beecher Stowe

A novel that strongly depicts the cruelty of slavery in 19th century America and is one of the most influential works in the fight against slavery. The novel (1852) caused enormous social reactions and contributed to the strengthening of the abolitionist

The plot follows the fate of Uncle Tom, a kind-hearted and pious black slave who goes through a series of tragic events after his owner, due to financial problems, sells him to a ruthless slave trader. Tom leaves his beloved family and is moved from one plantation to another, facing the cruelty of the new masters.

Parallel to Tom's story, the novel follows Eliza, a young slave who runs away with her child to avoid being sold and the separation of her family. Her escape across the frozen Ohio River is one of the most poignant and dynamic parts of the book.

The character of Uncle Tom symbolizes courage, patience and Christian kindness, while the slave owners are depicted with different shades of character — from the compassionate master Shelby to the cruel and cruel Simon Legree.

Stowe uses an emotionally powerful narrative and realistically portrays the suffering of slaves, calling for compassion and justice. The book played a key role in shaping public opinion about slavery and became an inspiration to many who fought to end this inhumane practice.
