Seventeen-year-old Naoko Nakamura's arranged marriage will secure her family a good position in their traditional Japanese community. But Naoko has fallen in love with an American sailor, and if she marries him, she will bring great shame to her entire family. When the family found out that Naoko was carrying the sailor's child, she was ostracized and forced to make unimaginable decisions, the consequences of which will be felt by future generations.

While taking care of her dying father, Tori Kovač finds a letter in which she finds an incredible discovery. Tori sets out on a journey to find out the truth, and the journey takes her to a remote fishing town in Japan where she must face the demons of her past to find a way to redemption.
