U zlopolju

Dragutin Grgurević

"In Zlopolje" by Dragutin Grgurević tells the story of the operations of the Third Dalmatian National Liberation Strike Brigade during the NOB. The book is small in format, but of great importance for understanding the local aspects of the NOB.

The action takes place in the remote Zlopolje region – a mountainous area of Dalmatia, where the brigade undergoes combat operations, technical obstacles and human destinies. Through a series of reports and chronicles, the author provides direct descriptions: from the conflict with the occupier, through the organizational formation of the unit, to the battles to conquer key positions. The focus is on the courage, determination and suffering of the Partisan fighters.

Grgurević also uses the book as documentary material – he lists the number of people, weapons, logistical challenges and geographical conditions of Zlopolje. This makes the work a valuable historical source for understanding local conflicts and the strategies for the liberation of central Dalmatia. The style is precise and reportage, with some analysis of the brigade’s significance for the overall course of the national liberation struggle.

Particularly impressive are the scenes from the direct conflict – nights in the mountains, fear, suffering and moments of togetherness – which evoke the atmosphere of everyday war for the reader. The author promotes the idea of solidarity and fighting spirit, but also emphasizes the human cost of the revolution. The book combines reportage language and expert information, and provides the reader with vital insight into the wartime circumstances and the organization of the Partisan army in Dalmatia.
