A look at the work of a modern day hospital through the lens of the pathology department.
The story takes place in the large American hospital Three Counties Hospital, where a conflict arises between an old pathologist, Dr. Joseph Pearce, who is close to retirement, and a young, ambitious, modern doctor, Dr. David Cole, who believes that Pearce is no longer up to the task in the modern medical system.
