Tresak

Tresak

Nick Hornby

Just when it seemed that everything was falling into place for fifteen-year-old Sam, that everything was just as it should be - life, mom, school, relationship - Alicia, his girlfriend, will drop a real bomb. Alicia is, or rather, his ex-girlfriend, since

Protagonist Rob Fleming, the 35-year-old owner of the London record store Championship Vinyl, experiences a "blow" - a breakup with his long-time girlfriend Laura, a therapist. Instead of facing his emotions, Rob escapes into a top-5 list: best fight, worst punishment, greatest love, greatest heartbreak and oldest sex memory - all of which shed light on his chaotic emotional life.

With the help of his cynical friend Dick and the obsessive Barry, Rob analyzes his past: his teenage relationship with Alison Ashworth (who left him for an older man), Alyssa, Penny, Sarah, Elizabeth and others, where he always feels like a victim. Laura, now with a doctor, seeks a divorce, but Rob fights for her through comical attempts - from visiting her father to a night out with an 18-year-old. Through self-deprecating monologues, Hornby mocks male maturity: Rob admits that "winning" is only when you don't remember, but the lists force him into introspection.
