Words are like people: they are born, grow, travel, cross the borders of municipalities, provinces and states, adapt, change nationality and citizenship, reproduce, age and die, and – unlike people, similar to gods – they can also be resurrected.
Dead, buried deep in forgotten dictionaries, books and writings, they may one day come to life and once again perform their communicative, poetic or any other function. This book deals with words for the most part. It selects and edits articles previously published in Školske novine, and some in the journal Jezik. Language advice is given here in a broader, not only grammatical or orthographic, but also in sociolinguistic, historical-linguistic, linguostylistic, communicational and cultural light, and with the aim of drawing the reader into reflection on the language in order to consciously decide on the recommended choice, but also to make a well-thought-out decision about their choice, starting from the criteria that permeate this book and are indirectly contained in the title. The book is intended for educational and cultural workers, but also for anyone who is interested in improving their own language culture.
