Enzo Bettiza

Exile is the autobiographical-memoir work of Enzo Bettiza, a journalist, writer and politician born in Split, who left his hometown and went to Italy after the Second World War.

The book depicts his life between two identities – his Dalmatian-Mediterranean origin and the Italian political and intellectual reality – and describes the dramatic historical circumstances that marked Southeastern Europe in the 20th century. The author describes the disappearance of old Europe, Italian fascism, the end of World War II, the establishment of Yugoslavia, post-war reprisals, as well as the political changes that led to the exodus of the Italian population from Istria and Dalmatia. Exile is a memoir in which Bettiza combines personal history with large-scale historical processes. The book is important as a testimony to Dalmatia’s multiethnic past, the exodus of the Italian community, and the identity crisis of an individual caught between two worlds.
