Kršćansko savršenstvo

Živan Bezić

The first systematic Croatian Catholic asceticism – the science of Christian spiritual life and the path to holiness. Don Živan Bezić, a Split-Makarska priest, theologian, pedagogue and Dachau concentration camp survivor, writes from a deep experience of

The book is a systematic manual for spiritual growth, intended for priests, religious, and laypeople.

Main topics:

  • The concept of perfection: Distinguishes natural perfection (ethical and moral improvement of man through the powers of reason and will) from supernatural perfection (life in grace, union with God through Christ).
  • Grace and the role of the Holy Spirit: Spiritual progress is not only human effort, but cooperation with God's grace. Bezić emphasizes that perfection is a gift, not just an achievement.
  • The fight against imperfection: Analyzes sin, vices, temptations, the devil, and the world as obstacles. Presents asceticism as a "Christian art" (ars) - the practice of virtue, self-denial, penance, and prayer.
  • Virtues and paths of perfection: Discusses in detail the theological (faith, hope, love) and cardinal virtues, and the evangelical counsels (poverty, chastity, obedience) as means for greater union with God.
  • Prayer, sacraments and spiritual guidance: Prayer is the heart of asceticism; sacraments (especially the Eucharist and penance) are a source of strength; the need for a spiritual director.
  • Mysticism and a contemporary approach: Distinguishes asceticism (the active path) from mysticism (the passive path of enlightenment). In later editions, he integrates post-conciliar emphases: the role of the laity, charismatic movements, the Holy Spirit in everyday life.

Bezić writes clearly, pastorally, without excessive scholastic apparatus, but with a deep knowledge of tradition (Thomas Aquinas, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila). The work is optimistic: perfection is possible for everyone in every class, because the call to holiness is universal (Lumen gentium).

This is a classic work of Croatian Catholic spirituality - the foundation for formation, spiritual exercises and personal growth towards evangelical radicalism and love.
